29557 Feet 1870 Dan Herald Canoe, Ontario Canada$30,000
Only 8 canoe's of this type in existence. Dan Harold built canoes from about 1869-1889. The reason his boats were so unique is that the outside bottom of the boat only consists of 6 cedar boards. This boat was built in Bangor Maine in 1901 by Karl Anderson (originally from Norway) for salmon pond fishing on the Penobscot River, home to the nation's first salmon club, once nationally known for its tradition of sending the first salmon caught each year to the U.S. President. In 1912, Karl caught the first salmon sent to President William H. Taft in this boat. He built about a hundred of them but as far as anyone knows, this is the only surviving one. Canvas covered and painted, it was designed and built for fishing and has oars but can also be paddled like a canoe. It last saw service around 1940 on Moosehead lake by Karl's grandson. Built by Charles H Wilbur he was part of the shop known as Wilbur and Wheelock of Clayton, NY. There is no nameplate other than the engine plate which is on a 1916 Ford Model "T". The serial no on the engine is 21 which may refer to the year converted by the St Lawrence marine Co. The engine was rebuilt by a restorer in Iowa who has rebuilt hundreds of model A's, B's and T's. The hull has been faired using cedar strips and epoxies with West System. The area along the keel however has not and it takes several days to soak up. The launch has been adapted to 8V power for the bilge and period lighting. The fuel tank has been cleaned and lined. The seating was non-existent when I purchased the boat, so the layout was adapted from observing other launches and built to fit the hull.

Last in the water in 1992. Motor was winterized before storage. This is a great running boat and rides as advertised. She was originally on Lake George, traded in on another boat, and was then stored for years at the dealer. When the dealer went out of business, the inventory of boats were sold at auction. The current owner purchased the boat in 1983-84. It was put in on the Great Sacandaga Lake in the town of Day, and was used every weekend and vacation for the next 5 or 6 years. In that time while trailering it to a show, a bottom board and the chine broke. All the chines were then replaced, a small section of keel and only the boards that were damaged on the bottom. The sub floor of the triple V bottom was replaced with 1/4" plywood west system, in place of the 1/4" mahogany. She was then used on Long Lake, NY for 2 years.
